*California Code of Regulations Sections: 1399.541(h), 1399.610 and 1399.612. A PA may administer, provide, or issue a drug order for Schedule II through V controlled substances without patient specific approval if the PA completes specified educational requirements and if his/her Supervising Physician delegates the authority to them.

Controlled Substances Education Course
(Meets requirements pursuant to California Code of Regulations Sections: 1399.541(h), 1399.610 and 1399.612)
AB 3 was signed by the Governor and became law on January 1, 2008 creating the
California Physician Team Practice Improvement Act. In part, AB 3 authorized a PA
to administer, provide, or issue a drug order for Schedule II through V controlled
substances without patient specific approval if the PA completes specified educational
requirements and if his/her supervising physician delegates the authority to them.
PAs completing this course and passing the post test will meet those educational
requirements as defined in the above regulations.
Registration begins at 9:00 am
Program
Andrew Lowe, Pharm.D.
10:00 a.m. Federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to the provision, administration and furnishing of controlled substances. The use of secure drug order forms.
11:00 a.m.

Comparison of efficacy data and safety profiles which
influence the selection, usage, conversion and clinical
rationale for the use of pharmacological agents.

11:30 a.m. 10 Minute Break
Noon Other uses for controlled substances
1:00 p.m. Box Lunch Provided
1:45 p.m. Disorders routinely requiring a therapeutic regimen of controlled substances for clinical management.
2:15 p.m. Controlled substance’s potential for abuse and addiction, its psychosocial aspects, the recognition of the symptoms (including controlled substance-seeking behaviors).
3:15 p.m. Break

3:30 p.m. The legal and professional relationship between a
physician assistant and the supervising physician. Charting
requirements.
4:00 p.m.

Recognition, prevention and management of acute and
chronic pain.

Evaluation of the response and compliance of the patient to the controlled substances.

4:30 p.m. Provision of appropriate patient education regarding
controlled substances.
5:00 p.m. Post Test

Registration Fees:
$110 for CAPA Members
$200 for Non CAPA Members

Refund Policy: If you are registered for the Palm Springs Course, there will be a $25 service charge on refunds made before September 29, 2010. No refunds will be made after this date.

Parking: There is a free airport shuttle for Renaissance guests. If you are driving and you are not a guest at the Renaissance Hotel there is a $10 charge to self park. If you are a guest, parking is included in your hotel Resort Fee.

PA License Number:
Please be sure to include your PA License number on the registration form and bring that number with you on the day of the course. It will be used as an identifier on your post test Scantron.

Accreditation: (6 Hours Cat. I CME)
This program has been reviewed and is approved for 6 hours Category I (preapproved) CME credit by the American Academy of Physician Assistants. It was planned in accordance with the AAPA’s CME Standards for Lecture-Learner Programs and for Commercial Support of Lecture- Learner Programs. In order to fulfill the requirements of California Code of Regulations Sections: 1399.541(h), 1399.610 and 1399.612 you must attend the entire 6-hour course, take and pass the post test.
