Governing Documents for PAs
PAs in California are licensed by the:
Physician Assistant Board (PAB)
2005 Evergreen Street, Suite 2250

A PA may apply for licensure in California following the successful completion of a PA training program approved by the PAB and must pass the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) given by the NCCPA. The passage of this exam “certifies” the PA which is designated by PA-C. In order to maintain this certified designation, the PA must be recertified every two years with required CME and every ten years by examination through the NCCPA. California license renewal will require a minimum of 50 CAT 1 CME hours every 2 years, however, current NCCPA Certification will be accepted as meeting the state’s CME requirement.
Laws & Regulations Related to the Practice of PAs - Issued by the PAB February 2023
DEA Registration is required for PAs who have been authorized to issue drug orders for controlled substances in Schedule II-V. Fill out the application carefully – errors and/or omissions may delay the process. The typical processing time is 4 to 6 weeks for a new application. For registered PAs, any change in address should be reported.
California B&P Code – 3502.1(D1)
