Summary of PA Practice
The majority, but not all, of the LAWS pertaining to PA practice are found in Article 1, General Provisions, of the PA PRACTICE ACT (updated January 1, 2020) beginning with Section 3500 of the California Business and Professions Code (BPC) – just 6 pages. Sections are listed below.
PA Practice Act: BPC, Article 1, Chapter 7.7, Article 1, § 3500-3503.5
The majority, but not all, of the REGULATIONS pertaining to PA practice are found in Article 4, Practice of Physician Assistants, of the CA CODE OF REGULATIONS (CCR) beginning Section 1399.540 – just 5 pages. Sections are listed below.
CCR: Title 16, Article 4, §: 1399.540 through 1399.547
Please note: regulations are typically significantly delayed following the passing of a new law/statute. Until the regulations are updated, the PA Practice Act and Business and Professions Code supersede outdated regulations.
PA Practice and Utilization Best Practices
Despite the experience and education of PAs, some employers, and even PAs themselves, are unsure of what exactly PAs are capable of doing in day-to-day practice. To help FQHCs and nonprofit community clinics maximize the utilization of PAs to 1) improve patient access and care, 2) keep healthcare costs low, and 3) see/treat more patients, CAPA produced a series of short white papers to educate and spotlight the ways in which PAs and their employers and elevate PA practice in various settings.
